“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

From our Board of Trustees:

It’s July 2020, the month we celebrate freedom!  However, in light of many protests (despite the threat of a global pandemic) against systemic racism and police violence toward African Americans in this country, the idea of freedom for all has been questioned in recent weeks.

UCR is an inclusive and open spiritual community where we welcome all people, regardless of their station in life.  Yet, we know that many of our Black sisters and brothers have been, and continue to be, severely impacted by the deep roots of racism.  If we’re willing to embrace change, we must pause and ponder this challenge we’re facing by taking a deeper, kinder view of our beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors.

Knowing and understanding Unity principles is not enough -- we must also live the Truth we know through our thoughts, words and actions.  We are committed to working closely with you in the hope that, together, this painful moment will lead to intention of equality, humanity and inclusion for all.   In that spirit, we encourage you to have these uncomfortable discussions openly, and we invite your ideas on how to better address this issue as a loving spiritual community.  Addressing this issue and not being silent is an important first step. Doing more about it is the true test:  self-education—learning about the history of Black oppression and violence; exercising the right to vote and actively working to elect local and national officials who will fight for change is an essential step to fight systemic racism; donating to, or volunteering with, organizations led by people of color to really press for the agenda of racial equality and equity are all a great start.

As we open to our spiritual connection with all beings, Divine imagination shows us new possibilities, Divine love harmonizes our relationships, Divine wisdom and understanding guide our decisions and actions, and Divine faith strengthens our commitment to transform our life experiences. May we remain resolute in walking the course of human rights and social justice for all. We pray in the spirit of unity, love, and oneness.
